The word wilderness is derived from the notion of wildness; uncultivated, uninhabited, in other words without human modification. The social and political realities of “nature verses economics” makes defining wilderness in the 21st Century ever more elusive. What is “wild”, what can be called “wilderness”, what is the measure of human “influence” that defines wildness?

Conceptions of wilderness have been important subjects for visual artists throughout history. Notions of Wilderness includes artists deploying multiple mediums to uncover their context of wildness.

This exhibition looks at painting practices that employ both the language of abstraction and representation. There are many practices that employ the slippage of those languages in single works but a compelling current trend is to produce both types of paintings in the studio. Does this mean that individually these languages cannot fulfill artist’s need to articulate precise meaning and idea? Is this a type of multi-lingualism? This show will illustrate these shifts by exhibition representational work and abstract work by each artist represented. It will also serve as an investigation into the broader reaches of such non-focused picture making.
